Style My Soul Explores ….
To delve into the multifaceted concept of fashion, we asked industry leaders to share their thoughts. Their insights, ranging from fashion as self-expression and sustainability to prevailing trends and current focuses, offer a rich tapestry of perspectives on the evolution and personal definition of fashion over the past decade. Self-Expression and Sustainability Fashion is an ever-evolving and effective tool for self-expression. It is the way we choose to dress and present ourselves to the world, expressing our creativity and individuality. Our fashion choices are continually influenced and shaped by a variety of cultural, societal, and personal factors. Fashion is a means of not only expressing one’s identity and style but also can be used to convey their beliefs. Over the past decade or so, there is no other factor that has forced me to re-evaluate my fashion choices as much as sustainability and the ethical sourcing of materials. I have become super aware of our pervasive use-and-throw culture and how I have contributed to this destructive phenomenon.I have realized how important it is to support brands that prioritize responsible manufacturing, fair labor and trade practices, and the use of environmentally friendly materials. - Dhiren Nautiyal, Principal, GNN INTERNATIONAL Modern Trends and Brand Adaptation Fashion is defined as a culmination of modern trends and interests in the clothing we wear. A time period can usually be recognized instantly by looking at a picture and analyzing the clothes people are wearing. This is unique and is because of our ability to connect trends and interests with the clothes we wear. In our clothing brand, a certain item, JJ Suspenders, has been tried to instill across all eras and find ways to make them fit with the other trends and styles that pop up. The aim is to create suspenders that can be worn in 2023, but also fit into 1993 and 2043. By trying new things and making the highest quality products, it is believed that we are closer to doing this. - Josh Bluman, Co-Founder, JJ Suspenders Personal Choice and Creativity As someone who writes about sartorial matters, I should have a perfectly packaged definition of fashion at the ready. But, much like my evolving style, the term is difficult to pin down. What I can say, though, if my incurable habit of analyzing outfits has taught me anything, is that fashion is self-expression in motion. A lover of the symphony will tell you the music expresses sentiments she can’t put into words. A lover of fashion will tell you her garments do the same. It’s no surprise then, that there’s a deliberate aspect to fashion. A sense that the wearer made a creative choice — those rounded loafers, the opalescent barrette, the French Tuck — and is sticking by it. Whether I find it appealing or off-kilter, that’s secondary. Fashion is nothing if not personal. Just as a fragrance settles differently depending on the individual, clothes are inextricably influenced by the wearer. As a friend playfully remarked to an outfit compliment, “It’s not the clothes, it’s the hanger.” - Celeste Routh, SEO Strategist, The Elegance Edit Defining Fashion through Accessories To me, fashion is the accessories one chooses to wear each day. The types of jewelry, bracelets, earrings, and rings someone wears are the ultimate forms of expression and can say so much about someone. Plus, they can show off so much beauty! Clothing is inevitable, but the accessories someone chooses to wear are the stylistic choices I’m always most curious to see. That’s fashion! - Brandon Aversano, Founder, The Alloy Market Prevailing Trends and Current Focuses I would define fashion as a popular and prevailing style or trend in clothing, accessories, footwear, makeup, and overall appearance at a particular time and place. It encompasses not only what people wear but also how they choose to express their individuality and identity through their clothing and style choices. Fashion is a dynamic and ever-changing form of self-expression that reflects cultural, social, economic, and personal influences. Fashion has definitely evolved over time, and I would describe fashion in today’s world as something that focuses on sustainability, inclusivity, and athleticism because of the rise in awareness of health and wellness. It can be minimalistic or boujee, as well as influenced by streetwear styles. Many consumers and brands have become more focused on sustainable and eco-friendly practices, including the use of organic materials, recycling, upcycling, and reducing waste. The fashion industry has made strides in becoming more inclusive and encourages diverse beauty standards. - Joe Li, Managing Director, CheckYa
