Style My Soul Explores …
As the Fall season approaches, we asked seven industry leaders, including operations managers and CEOs, for their top DIY home project suggestions. Set Up an Outdoor Compost Bin A fantastic DIY home project for the upcoming fall season is setting up an outdoor compost bin. With leaves falling in abundance, it’s an excellent opportunity to recycle organic waste and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. Creating a compost bin doesn’t require specialized skills or expensive materials. To get started, you can stack wooden pallets to form a three-sided enclosure, securing them with nails or zip ties for stability. Alternatively, you can wrap a length of wire mesh into a cylinder and fasten the edges together. If you’re using a trash can, simply drill holes along the sides for aeration. Once your structure is ready, begin layering yard waste, kitchen scraps, and fallen leaves, keeping a balance of greens and browns for effective composting. By placing the compost bin outdoors, you’ll be able to easily add organic waste and fallen leaves, turning them into nutrient-rich soil for your garden. The cooler fall temperatures also help to speed up the process. - Zakhar Ivanisov, Founder and General Manager, Soul & Lane Create a Backyard Fire-Pit Area Consider creating an outdoor fire-pit area in your backyard this fall. It’s a cozy DIY project that enhances warmth and outdoor gathering space. Enjoy the cool fall evenings by the fire, roast marshmallows, and create lasting memories with your loved ones. It’s a project that adds beauty and functionality to your outdoor space. - Aaditya Bhatta, Founder and Editor, Plants Craze Craft an Autumn Harvest Wreath One DIY home project that people can undertake during the upcoming fall season is creating a decorative and functional “Autumn Harvest” wreath for their front door. To start off, you’ll need these: a grapevine wreath, faux foliage, decorative ribbon, a hot glue gun and glue sticks, wire cutters, and scissors. Lay out all your materials and ensure you have a clean, well-lit area to work in. Start by laying out the foliage and other decorations on your wreath to plan their placement. Experiment with different arrangements until you find a design you like. Use the hot glue gun to secure the foliage and decorations to the grapevine wreath. Be careful not to burn yourself and ensure everything is firmly attached. Cut the decorative ribbon into desired lengths and create bows or loops. Attach these to the wreath using the hot glue gun. Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement and everything is securely in place, make any final adjustments, and trim any excess ribbon or foliage. Now, you can hang it! - Joe Li, Managing Director, CheckYa Start a Fall Herb Garden Undertake a DIY herb-garden project during your leisure time in the upcoming fall season. It allows you to enjoy gardening and grow fresh herbs at home. Start by selecting a suitable location, such as a sunny windowsill or a small outdoor space. Choose herb varieties that thrive in the fall, such as sage, thyme, rosemary, and parsley. Prepare the soil, either in pots or in a raised bed, and plant the herbs. Ensure they receive adequate sunlight, water, and proper care. As fall progresses, you can harvest the herbs and incorporate them into your delicious recipes, adding a fresh and flavorful touch to your meals. - Yoana Wong, Co-Founder, Secret Florists Build a Raised Garden Bed One DIY home project for leisure time during the upcoming fall season is building a raised garden bed. While many focus on gardening during spring or summer, fall is an ideal time to plant certain crops and prepare for the next growing season. Building a raised bed provides better drainage, soil control, and protection from pests. For example, one could construct a 4x4-foot raised bed using wood boards, add nutrient-rich soil mixed with compost, and plant cool-season vegetables like lettuce, kale, and carrots. This project allows individuals to grow their own food and enjoy a sustainable and rewarding activity during their leisure time. - Roy Lau, Co-Founder, 28 Mortgage Design a Cozy Reading Nook One DIY home project for the upcoming fall season is creating a cozy reading nook. Rearrange a corner with comfortable seating, soft blankets, and pillows. Add warm lighting with string lights or a small lamp. Consider installing floating shelves to house your favorite books. Personalize the space with autumn-themed decor like seasonal artwork or dried flowers. A reading nook offers a relaxing retreat for the colder months, encouraging relaxation and cultivating a comforting atmosphere in your home. - Aviad Faruz, CEO, Know Mastery
