We all live extremely fast paced, busy lives. It seems the world is spinning faster and there is less time for me. Less time to be.
As time speeds up, we become confused, stressed and anxious. The proverbial To Do List takes over our precious lives and we are burdened by the incessant chores of just keeping up. And now, with increased cost-of-living pressures, this burden often becomes overwhelming. We are hamsters on the treadmill running faster, getting nowhere, seeking escape in mindless entertainment, social media scrolling and substance abuse even if that substance is digital. So, between working on our computers, scrolling social media on our smartphones and then ‘relaxing’ watching television, it adds up to: 2.47 + 4.30 + 3 = 10 hours and 17 minutes per day! Yikes! No wonder we are always poor. There is this great saying about the cars that ate China; what about the monitor that took our lives away? Assuming even 7 hours per sleep a day, that leaves 17 hours of waking consciousness — 10 of which are spent, on average, on some form of digital platform. Not much time left for living. The Digital Download What is far more important than the time we spend is the messaging we receive. We simply must accept in this age of message manipulation, narrative control, corporatocracy surveillance, political propaganda and emotional entrapment that we all do swim in the establishment swamp. We spend most of our waking hours being bombarded with carefully curated information that is specifically designed to ‘herd’ us in predetermined directions. We are losing the ability to think critically for ourselves and to exercise any form of intelligent personal sovereignty. We are fast becoming a species of clones being mined daily for our personal data so that we can become more effectively controlled and manipulated for political power and corporate greed. The Energy Vacuum What is also overlooked is the ‘energy exchange’ that occurs during this digital transmission. It is not just a question of absorbing false and misleading information. More importantly, we are continually being robbed of our personal energy, vitality and life force. The monitor literally vacuums our energy. It is a two-way process. Information download — energy upload. Constant exposure to the electro-magnetic field surrounding electronic devices is damaging to the human energy field. It is no coincidence that the number one epidemic in the western world, as declared by WHO, is depression, anxiety, loneliness. In a word, mental illness. We need to disconnect from our screens to reconnect with life. To reconnect with ourselves, to reconnect with our loved ones, to reconnect with the reality of our daily lives. Your story We need to tune into our own personal story and not the artificial lives portrayed by the celebrity world on both social and mass media. There is this great line in Desiderata: if you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter. The celebrity, Hollywood, influencer and Madison Avenue world is deliberately designed to feed your not-good-enough syndrome, leaving you feeling unsatisfied with your own life and thus wanting more of what they have on offer. All algorithms work on the same principle — keep you on the platform longer and thus locked into the system. This whole socio-economic system is crafted around convincing you that you ‘need’ what they want to sell to make your life work better, to make you more attractive and successful. Your life is your most precious possession. Spend time with you. Honor who you are. Become aware of and enjoy your own story. Get involved in the nuances and the details. Know where you want to go. Live your life your way. Be authentic. Spend Time in Nature The best antidote to excessive digital exposure is to go outside, take off your shoes and ‘ground’ yourself. This will ‘earth’ your electro-magnetic field restoring electric balance and rejuvenating your energy. Walk in nature. Spend some time in the sun. Bathe frequently in fresh running water. Spend time with animals and young children. Spend quality time with your family and loved ones, not mindlessly sitting in front of a television, but engaging in conversation, games and personal interaction. Practice yoga, meditation, and mindful walking. Creativity Work with pencil and paper when doing lists, planning your life or writing anything creative. You will discover enhanced levels of creativity if your first draft is on paper and then you move to a computer. Read physical books rather than from a screen. Listen to the sounds of nature, especially birdsong and the breeze in the trees. Track Your Monitor Usage Become aware of and monitor your time in front of a screen. Set limits and give yourself ample breaks, getting up, stretching, talking walks, drinking water. Refresh yourself. If you suffer from fatigue, depression, tiredness, or other forms of energy lack, limit your screen time and avoid having a smartphone near you when you sleep. Avoid having any form of device or monitor in the bedroom. Spend increasing quality time away from your phone especially when in nature or with loved ones. And especially when eating! Savor your food. Be grateful for its nourishment. Enjoy. Read a book before going to sleep. Do not engage with a device immediately before or immediately after sleep. Practice relaxation before sleep and mindfulness upon waking. Ease yourself into the day with walking, stretching, yoga and so on before picking up that phone to ‘see’ what is going on. What is really going on in your life is ‘out there’ in your world, not ‘in there’ inside the false digital world. Embrace your life! Live authentically! Consciously pull your consciousness away from that screen. Do not let the ‘ping’ dominate your awareness. It can wait.
